Mattawa Team Captures 1st place at Cassels Lake Bass Tournament
The Temiskaming Smallmouth Bass Tournament Series had one beautiful weekend for the 2 events being held
last weekend in Temagami, home of the 2010 Bass Classic. At 530am anglers started to unload their boats on
Cassels Lake with great expectations of big Bass that roam the Lake.

The team of Barry Bennit and Ken Loya Jr from Mattawa had a plan coming into the Tournament, and when everyone blasted
off the team just got up lowered thier trolling motor and started fishing right at the blast off site. After
catching a few nice Bass they stated slowly moving down the shore line, watching for any fish that might be
busting water chaseing small fish, and kept a eye out for other fish roaming the shore line. Its a simple trick
alot of anglers use from time to time, but coming to the scales at the end of the day with 15.30lbs to take
1st place just goes to show you that sometimes simple little things mean a lot.

On the other hand, the team of Dave LaFontaine from Earlton and Steve McLean from Tomstown had a plan coming
into the Tournament, but after 2 hrs of just little fish the team realized it was time to change the plan and
go to thier back up plan, but soon realized they did not have a back up plan, so they made one up, stayed calm
looked for new fish and came to the scales with 13.70lbs which was good enough to take 2cd place.

Another well known team from Mattawa Brent and Darren Belanger new exactly what they where going to do all day
and stayed to thier plan, fishing a area that they had faith in which proved to be good enough to produce 12.68lbs
giving the team the 3rd place award.

In this Series our goal is to give young anglers, under 16, the chance to fish in a Tournament with a team, so
that they can learn what Tournament fishing is all about and get some experiance along the way. The team is "ONLY"
allowed to do this in the qualifiers but not in the Classic, the Classic is only a 2 man team. If the young angler
fishes 4 events and finds a partner who has done the same they may fish the Classic as a team. The team of
Sam & Isaac Lauson from Ottawa have a younger brother Joel who is a fishing fanadic, and the boys have decided to
let Joel fish with them in the Qualifiers. Now if you think "thats not fair" just think of this, its 70 or 80 degrees
out, no wind, the fish are not biteing, and one or 2 of the 3 lines are getting stuck on bottom all day long, plus
you really wont to win, but know winning is not everything. Think you could do it and keep your cool, hmmmmm
I thought so. But then there is the up side, young Joel happened to catch the only 2 fish the boys got all day
and 1 of them was a 4.46lb that gave the team big fish of the day. On top of this the boys won the free draw prize
for the 2 nights free room at Paradise Lodge, complements of the owners Doug and Marg Adams.
